The Most Unusual Musical Instruments of the World! - Perdoscope https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCYHMVlQezA&t=359s
- Make instruments from items found around the house (drums, shakers, guitars).
- Learn to juggle. Juggling well requires rhythm. Start with scarves. They move more slowly through the air.
- Put on music and dance together. The funnier your dance, the more the giggling there will be. Dance with scarves or balloons, do a freeze dance, or dance like an animal. Play music with different speeds and moods.
- Make up a Stomp routine. Stomp uses everyday items and uses them to make up a dance routine. Brooms, balls, buckets, use your imagination!
- Compose a rap or song about something new you have learned or about your day. Make sure it is performed.
- Have your recorder, piano, strings or band student demonstrate what they have learned, or have them teach a parent or a sibling.
- Experiment with water glass music. Be scientific about it or not. Just put some sounds together that are pleasing. If you are fortunate enough to use crystal goblets, then wet your fingers and rub the top rim of the glass in a circular motion..
- Find boxes, rubber containers like garden tubs, and plastics containers like measuring cups. Turn them over like drums and tap on them with your fingers and hands. Perform a steady beat, a rhythm or 'ta ta ti-ti ta'. Ask a family member to perform a steady beat while you play a rhythm. Experiment with other kitchen-utensil-based sounds to create a kitchen band.
- Play a piece of music and have your child describe the mood and feelings listening to it creates. Any genre will work--Classical, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Broadway Musical, etc. Extend this activity with SQUILT below.
Play a piece of music (any genre will work--Instrumental, Vocal, Rock, Pop, Broadway Musical, Heavy Metal, New Age, Country & Western, etc.). While your body is really still and quiet, really listen to it. Choose one or more questions below, and share what you hear with someone else or write it in a journal.
- Is there variation, or change, of dynamics (loud and soft)?
- If you wanted to purchase this recording, in what category or genre (Country & Western, Rhythm & Blues, Opera, etc.) would you search?
- Do you think that the composer wanted this music to sound serious or comical?
- If you were going to use this piece in a commercial, what product would you be selling?
- Do you think you have heard this music before? Where?
- If this music were used in a movie, what would be happening in the scene?
- What instruments do you hear?
- Is there tonality? Is it major (like Barney) or minor (like Dracula)?
- Is there a steady beat? Is it fast or slow?
- What does this music make you want to do? Dance? March? Float? Sleep? Cry?
- When do you think this music was composed? Baroque period? Classical period? Romantic? Modern?
- If you were watching this piece at a concert, how many people do you think would be on stage?
- Do you have an idea about who the composer might be?
- Do you hear a variety of volume levels? Does it crescendo (getting louder) or decrescendo (getting softer)?
- Does this song make you think of a particular country or culture? Which one?
- Do you hear more dissonance (sounds that don't fit together) or harmony (sounds that do fit together)?
- Do you hear rhythmic patterns that repeat?
- Is there a lot going on at once? Is it thick texture (lots of layers like a Dagwood or sub sandwich) or thin texture (few layers like an open-faced grilled cheese sandwich)?
- Have you heard music similar to this piece before?
